It has not been an easy holiday season for mega super athlete Tiger Woods. After news got out about his possible extra-marital affairs and the resulting fiasco surrounding it, the squeaky clean celebrity now has a new angle to his personality. Still, I think he handled the media conference aspects of it much better than others have in the past. Tiger is a very wealthy guy thanks to years of unprecedented sponsorship and endorsement deals. Suddenly advertisements with his iconic image have all but disappeared - especially on television. Sponsors are worried about possible negative associations with the star looming in the public at this time. Of course, none of this is a surprise. Like most scandals, this will likely more or less blow over in a few weeks or months. Whatever ensues in Tiger's personal life, is his own business. From a sponsorship standpoint, things won't be quite the same, as some of the more conservative advertisers will likely shun Tiger, although he was once the boy-wonder of conservative image athletes. One of Tiger's most popular sponsors is watch maker Tag Heuer - who has recently announced their dedication to sticking with the man who has likely been good for their business. Tag Heuer, while a Swiss watch maker, is French owned (by LVMH). While they may pause or delay advertisements in the immediate future, expect to see lots more Tag Heuer ads involving Tiger Woods, a baseball cap, a golf club, and a watch in the near future. During his first physical exam in several years, 55-year-old Joe mentioned that his 70-year-old sister was doing well after colon cancer 10 years ago. Joe's provider completed the examination, sent him for routine lab tests, and gave him a referral to see a gastroenterologist for his first screening colonoscopy. The GI doctor finds and removes a few colon polyps during the procedure, and recommends that Joe repeat the colonoscopy in three years.
Not all colon polyps become cancers, but all cancers come from polyps, Virgie Bright-Ellington, M.D., writes in Chapter 4 of 'What your Doctor Wants You to Know, But Doesn't Have Time To Tell You,'' which is being excerpted on AOL Black Voices Wellness blog."Adenomatous polyps are precancerous polyps that are found in colons of approximately 30 percent of middle aged and older individuals,'' Dr. Bright-Ellington writes. "Fortunately only a small percentage of those polyps become malignant (cancerous).''Colorectal cancer, cancer of the colon and rectum, is the third leading cause of cancer death in both African American men and women, according to a study released by the American Cancer Society in 2007, the latest figures available. Higher death rates from colorectal cancer account for one-fourth of the disparity in cancer death rates between African American and white women and 11 percent of the disparity between African American and white men. While reasons for the death rate are still being studied, some risk factors for developing colorectal cancer are related to genetics, obesity, physical inactivity, cigarette smoking, a diet high in red or processed meats, and heavy alcohol consumption. Protections against colorectal cancer include physical activity, a diet high in fruits and vegetables, and screening with removal of polyps, the study says.Beginning at age 50, it's recommended that you have screening colonoscopies every three to five years to deter polyps, Dr. Bright-Ellington, who trained at the Cambridge Hospital of Harvard Medical School. "However, if you have a parent or sibling diagnosed with colon cancer before age 50, talk with your provider about beginning regular screening colonoscopies approximately ten years before the age of the relative's diagnosis,'' she writes. "For instance, if your mom was diagnosed with colon cancer at the age of 40, your regular screening colonoscopies should start by age 30.''Many feel having a rectal examination or a colonoscopy (an examination of the colon with a camera at the end of a tube that goes into the rectum) is embarrassing, Dr. Bright-Ellington writes. You've probably heard this before, but doctors look at every party of the human body in a very detached, clinical way. It's true.Moral of the Story:When there is no polyp, there's no cancer. Beginning at age 50, get a screening colonoscopy every three to five years. Dr. Virgie Bright-Ellington is a graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School. She is a former clinical professor at New York University Medical School and a former instructor at Harvard Medical School, Youngstown State University and Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.

Google is clearly moving fast in setting up partnerships with ebook reader manufacturers and store operators to give some weight to its threat to Amazon and the latter’s Kindle product line.
First, the company teamed up with Sony, adding about 1 million public domain books to the technology giant’s eBook Store.
Now Mountain View has sealed a deal with British Interead, bringing the same amount of ebooks to an online store outside the U.S. for the first time (where close to half a million of them are available for free).
Reading-based Interead is the company behind ebook store COOLERBOOKS. The company also manufactures COOL-ER eReaders, small, elegant ebook readers that kinda look like giant iPods and cost $249 in the United States.
COOLERBOOKS.com accommodates 19 document formats, including EPUB and PDF, and MP3 for audio books, giving the ebookstore the broadest range of formats available on the web.
Enough to pose a threat to Amazon, just the beginning, or a venture destined for failure? Time will tell, but it’s always good to have alternative free ebook stores, even if you won’t be finding the bestsellers over there.

What were you doing in 1999? Maybe you were following the Kosovo War. Maybe you were starting to use Napster. Maybe you were entering your senior year of high school (I was). Or maybe you started blogging. After all, on August 23, 1999, Pyra Labs launched its Blogger product, which would go on to become the biggest blogging platform in the world.
Yes, on Sunday, Blogger turns 10 years old. And to celebrate, the Blogger team (which is now a part of Google following a 2003 acquisition) is promising a bunch of gifts to users in the form of new features. Without naming anything specifically, Blogger points to this list as a good reference point for some of what they’ll be rolling out over the next few weeks. Of note on that list are a better commenting system and WordPress-style pages (About page, etc).
It’s worth noting that Blogger’s roots are deeply tied to the new hot web platform of choice: Twitter. Pyra Labs was co-founded by Evan Williams, who is now the CEO (and co-founder) of Twitter. Also a part of Pyra Labs were Jason Goldman who now runs product development for Twitter, and Jason Shellen who now runs Thing Labs, the makers of Brizzly, a much buzzed-about new Twitter client.
Biz Stone, another Twitter co-founder, joined the Blogger team at Google before leaving with Williams in 2004 to start Obvious Corp. which would eventually birth and turn into Twitter. (An interesting side note is that Williams’ Pyra co-founder Meg Hourihan, eventually married Jason Kottke, who is best known as being one of the web’s most popular bloggers.)
These days, while the web is abuzz over Twitter, no one really talks much about Blogger despite millions of people using it everyday. The fact is that as a platform, it has fallen behind the more nimble blogging platforms like WordPress and Tumblr in recent years. Still, in terms of straight up simplicity in setting up a blog, it’s easy to see why Blogger is still popular among users (and, unfortunately, spammers).
Update: As as Faridur notes in the comments, current Twitter Creative Director Douglas Bowman also worked on the Blogger team back in the day.

Personal finance tracking site Mint.com added a bunch of new budgeting and trending features today. Mint presents consumers with a financial dashboard based on spending and income data from their bank, credit card, and other financial accounts. It expanded its charts to include spending over time, income history, asset allocation, and net worth over time.
You can now plan for irregular expenses such as property taxes, auto insurance, or vacations. Budgeted items can be rolled over into the next month if they haven’t been used up, and Mint now figures out your income based on your paycheck. It takes all of this data and projects your savings or shortfall over time.
All of these new features will be appreciated by Mint’s 1.4 million registered (and 550,000 active) users, but they also point to a new direction for the site: bookkeeping for small businesses.

TwitVid, the easy way to share videos straight to Twitter, released the first video Twitter application on the Blackberry App World for free. [App World URL] TwitVid will easily allow users to upload video from their mobule phones to TwitVid, just like in the iPhone application.
With the BlackBerry TwitVid application, TwitVid hopes to expand its overall market share for video sharing on Twitter. When atebits released Twitter for Mac, they partnered with ImageShack, the guys behind yFrog, to bring video recording integration into Tweetie. It doesn’t look like Tweetie will be adding Twitvid anytime soon, although the two are “in talks.”
But TwitVid did announce two new partnerships with other mobile Twitter apps; one with UberTwitter, and the other with Twitterrific from The Icon Factory. With both applications, TwitVid is the default video uploading service. UberTwitter recently started putting advertising in its app, which was the most popular Blackberry application for Twitter, until its received quite the backlash from the community.
A number of celebrities have also started using TwitVid as well, including Dane Cook, Mary J Blige, Ciara, Chris Daughtry, Baron Davis, Al Yankovic, David Blaine, Greg Grunberg, Stephen Fry and Dwight Howard, to name a few.
Co-Founder and COO of TwitVid, Mo Al Adham, mentioned that over the past month, the number of videos uploaded to the site have increased more than 17x, and the number keeps growing. TwitVid hopes to become one of the main options for uploading video to Twitter.

Mark Dean (born March 2, 1957) is an inventor and a computer scientist. He holds three of the nine original IBM patents upon which the IBM PC personal computers were based. He led the team that developed the ISA bus, and he led the design team responsible for creating the first one-gigahertz computer processor chip.
Born in Jefferson City, Tennessee, Dean holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee, a master's degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
Dean is the first African-American to become an IBM Fellow which is the highest level of technical excellence at the company. In 1997, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Currently, he is an IBM Vice President overseeing the company's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California.
Dean led a team that developed the interior architecture (ISA systems bus) that enables multiple devices, such as modems and printers, to be connected to personal computers.
Dean made history again by leading the design team responsible for creating the first 1-gigahertz processor chip, another significant step in making computers faster and smaller.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, reported about $2.7 million in income for 2008, mainly from book sales. The first couple paid about $855,000 in federal income taxes.
Their income declined from 2007, when the Obamas reported about $4.1 million, again mostly from books, and paid about $1.4 million in taxes.
"The president sold a lot of books last year, no doubt, and paid a hefty amount in federal income tax," press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday. The first family's effective tax rate was around 31%, down from the 33.7% rate they paid in 2007.

The 180-foot yacht has floating decks under a giant glass dome. It has eight staterooms that offer panoramic ocean views. The yacht uses Bugatti Marine engines that can hit 40 knots.
